We have just completed the first in what is planned to be a series of food photography based expeditions where we will travel to various parts of the UK staying in a different style of accommodation on each trip. The objective of each trip will be to source a range of locally produced products – meat, fish, cheese, bread etc and produce a number of easy to cook, yet interesting meals using the limited resources available within each accommodation. We will use our expertise in food photography to create an interesting angle on cooking whilst away from the home kitchen.

The challenges of food photography

Photographing food can be frustrating because by the time the lighting is right and the plate perfectly styled, the food is cold. Sometimes it is necessary to plate up one dish, work out how it should be lit and styled and then re-do it with a new plate of warm food. Basically a trial run.

Shooting food in a controlled environment is relatively easy compared to shooting outdoors where the light from the sun can be constantly changing, but it does make for wonderful backgrounds as can be seen below.
